In our September 21st class we also discussed Hypoxia, which is low concentrations of dissolved oxygen water. This is often caused by fertilizer, runoff, and sewage and is affecting areas such as the Gulf of Mexico's "Dead Zone". This is a region of water so depleted of oxygen that marine life is either killed or driven away. It is important that the government take action on matters such as the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico so that we can continue to use the resources that we receive from these areas.
The September 21st class covered a lot of material. We learned how environmental policy is developed. We also learned about the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico, which I had never heard of. It was troubling to learn that these pockets in the Gulf that have been so depleted of oxygen caused by runoff of fertilizer chemicals and animal waste entering into our waterways are killing the wildlife that inhabit the Gulf. The consequences of this are not only the loss of the animals but also the economic impact on those people whose livelihood depends on the animals that inhabit the Gulf. I also learned about the different govt agencies (NEPA, NAFTA, NGOs) and their functions. I also learned about atoms and matter and PH levels.
